Personal Safety in the US

According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, District of Columbia has the highest homicide rate amongst the U.S. states (23.3 homicides per 100 000 inhabitants). Among other most unsafe states are Louisiana (13.2), Mississippi (10.2), Alabama (9.8) and New Mexico (8.3). Most safely you can feel if you are white and you are in Minnesota or New Hampshir.

International Reserves Across Countries

Since 2006 China has become the world's largest holder of foreign exchange reserves (including gold). By the end of 2011 Chinese foreign exchange reserves increased to 3.2 trillion US$ and accounted for almost one third of foreign exchange reserves accumulated in the world. The amount of accumulated reserves allows China to pay for its imports during almost 2 years, without selling goods abroad.

Carpe Facto: Interesting facts about edible oils

These charts show characteristics of various edible oils. The most healthy oil or the only with least saturated fats is "Safflower oil" while one the other end is "Coconut oil". Smoke point is the temperature at which oil fat starts breaking down and looses both flavor and nutrition and "Avocado oil" has the highest smoke point.

Political Rights and Civil Liberties

According to the Freedom House's report "Freedom in the world 2012", 35.2% (or 2.45 billion) of people in the world are NOT free in terms of political and civil rights. Diagonal of unfree countries on the world map goes from Venezuela, Nicaragua and Cuba in Latin and Central America, through Central Africa and Middle East to Asian countries including China.

The United States loses competitiveness

The 2012-2013 Global Competitiveness Report from The World Economic Forum says that Switzerland has remained to be the most competitive economy since 2009. On the other side the United States has been losing its competitiveness positions after the world financial crisis. In 2012 the U.S. economy became only seventh in the ranking of competitiveness.

Largest Exporters of Personal Electronic Devices

Nowadays China has become number one world exporter of personal electronic devises.

In 2010 Chinese export of personal computers amounted to almost $150 billion, which was 6 times higher compared to the United States.

Major byers of Chinese personal computers are the U.S., Hong-Kong, Netherlands, Germany and Japan.

The World's Healthiest Countries

To identify the healthiest countries in the world, Bloomberg Rankings created health scores and health-risk scores for countries with populations of at least 1 million.

The risk score was subtracted from the health score to determine the country's rank. Five-year averages, when available, were used to mitigate some of the short-term year-over-year swings.

Growing Grain Prices

Due to the worst drought in the U.S. since 1956 and unfavorable weather conditions in the Black Sea region, world grain prices jumped in July. International Grain Counsil announced that its Grains and Oilseeds Index reached all-time high on July, 20th.

If the situation around world grain supply continue deteriorate, people in poor and developing countries can suffer from increasing food prices as food expenditures in many low income countries exceeds 30% and even 40% of final consumption expenditures.

Global Food Security Index

The Global Food Security Index, calculated by the Economist Intelligence Unit, is a composite assessment of food affordability, availability and quality across countries.
According to "The Global Food Security Index 2012" report "wealthy nations, with little surprise, perform best in the index: the US, Denmark and France hold the top three spots, followed closely by a number of northern European and Australasian countries.
High incomes, low spending on food relative to other outlays, and significant investment in agricultural research and development (R&D) put these countries at the top of the rankings. Sub-Saharan African countries are the most food insecure. Burundi, Chad and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) take the bottom three spots. Each of these countries has done little to enable food security; they do not even have enough food available to meet the daily caloric needs of everyone in the country. In the DRC, the national food supply amounts to 1,605 calories per person per day—43% below the recommended level for adults."

World Merchandise Trade

In 2009 China became the largest merchandise exporter in the world. In 2011 Chinese exports of goods accounted for more than 10% of world merchandise exports. Still comparably low labor costs and underestimated value of yuan make it more profitable to produce goods in China and import them to domestic markets all over the world.

Carpe Facto: Data and Facts for Movie Lovers

Today's post is a bit unusual because we are going to use guest visualization on our blog the first time ever. It comes from one of our enthusiastic users who chose a name Carpe Facto for himself. You could find a lot of excellent data & visualization work at his page at Knoema: Data Factoid of the day. It's a pleasure to present one of his pages today.

Movies generate income from several revenue streams including public exhibition in theaters, home video, television broadcast rights and merchandising. We have compiled data and visualizations showing trends in the movie industry in last 20 years.
This data is limited to movies in theaters. Some interesting observations are:
  • Over the years, this industry has always seen growth in revenues.
  • Last 10 years the ticket prices have almost gone up 60%
  • 20% less no. of ticket sales have been recorded since 2002, but the revenues have increased due to increased prices.

Introducing World Data Atlas

Dear Users,

Today is a special day for us because we would like to announce the most important feature we made available to you in last months. Since the very beginning we were pursuing two goals with Knoema:
  • Make as much statistical data as possible with the broadest coverage available to our users
  • Make it as easy as possible to utilize available data through visualizations, ready-to-use content and tools
We learned a lot about our users since Day 1 and were able to identify some broad use cases we didn’t handle particularly well. Many users coming to Knoema were looking for basic statistics such as GDP or population of specific countries. Also there were users looking for information about specific country (like United States or France) and related datasets. And process of finding such information wasn’t extremely easy and straightforward.

We decided to change that. Meet World Data Atlas. Key world statistics at your fingertips.

Age at first marriage

Age at first marriage varies significantly across countries. In general the higher is per capita income, the older are people who get married at first time. In developed European Countries like Germany, France, Italy, Sweeden, Norway and Finland the age at first marriage exceeds 30 years. On the other hand in low income African countries the age at first marriage is between 17-20 years for females and 23-25 years for males.

The most honeyed country in the world

It appears that Chinese bees produce 25% of all honey in the world. In 2010 they collected almost 400 thousand tones of honey or about 300g of honey per Chinese citizen.

How big is the shadow economy?

Official statistics for any country don't measure the full set of economic activities. What is registered and fully transparent to the authorities of each country is reported by official statistics. Surprisingly, the unreported part of economic activities for some countries is noticeable in size.

The so called "the shadow economy" is an economic activity that is "deliberately concealed from public authorities to avoid payment of income, value added or other taxes; to avoid payment of social security contributions; having to meet certain legal labour market standards, such as minimum wages, maximum working hours, safety standards, etc; and complying with certain administrative procedures, such as completing statistical questionnaires or administrative forms".

Weighted average share of the shadow economy is estimated to represent about 17% of the official world GDP. In such countries as Bolivia, Georgia, Panama and Zimbabwe the size of the shadow economy in 1999-2007 was higher than 60% of official GDP figures. The smallest size of the shadow economy was observed in the United Kingdom, United States, Luxemburg, Austria and Japan.

Availability of food across countries

Food is a basic human need. And we tried to estimate how much do people pay for food in different countries. It appeared that food availability significantly varies across countries.

In general, price of 1000 Kcal goes up inline with per capita income. For example, in Greece, Belarus, Croatia, Japan and Macedonia people pay $2.8 (based on PPP) for 1000 Kcal. At the same time in Nigeria, Uzbekistan, China India and Kenya the price of 1000 kcal is less then $0.7.

It is interesting, that the U.S. citizens pay for food noticably less compared to other developed and many developing countries.

Gender Inequality Index Around The World

The Gender Inequality Index (GII) reflects women’s disadvantage in three dimensions—reproductive health, empowerment and the labour market—for as many countries as data of reasonable quality allow. The index shows the loss in human development due to inequality between female and male achievements in these dimensions. It ranges from 0, which indicates that women and men fare equally, to 1, which indicates that women fare as poorly as possible in all measured dimensions.

The health dimension is measured by two indicators: maternal mortality ratio and the adolescent fertility rate. The empowerment dimension is also measured by two indicators: the share of parliamentary seats held by each sex and by secondary and higher education attainment levels. The labour dimension is measured by women’s participation in the work force. The Gender Inequality Index is designed to reveal the extent to which national achievements in these aspects of human development are eroded by gender inequality, and to provide empirical foundations for policy analysis and advocacy efforts.

World Crude Steel Production

Volume of crude steel production in China increased to 683 million metric tonnes in 2011, which was almost half of all crude steel produced in the world. The other largest producers (Japan, United States, India, Russia and South Korea) taken together, in 2011 produced 403 million metric tonnes of crude steel, which is equal to 21% of world production. During 2000-2011 production of crude still in China grew more than 6 times. Annual growth during last eleven years was about 18%.

Per capita steel use in China reached 445 kg of crude steel equivalent per capita in 2010, which is equal to the level of developed countries. It means that in mid-term run crude steel production in China will likely decelerate.

Discrepancies in International Trade Data

In theory, exports from country A to country B reported by country A should be equal to imports of country B from country A reported by country B. The reality is not so ideal. For example, lets compare data on Russian imports, reported by Russia, to data on exports to Russia, reported by Russian trade partners.

Russia reported that its imports from China and Germany were $48.2 bln. and $38.5 bln. in 2011 correspondingly. At the same time China and Germany reported that their exports to Russia were $38.9 bln. and $49.3 bln. in the same year. It is a 10 billion USD difference in both cases! How is it possible?

Data Update - July 11

Dear Readers,

We have published another 56 datasets including 12 new datasets from Eurostat, UNESCO, World Economic Forum & others and 44 updated version of datasets published by different sources such as CDIAC, EIA, WB, UNCTAD and others.

Dataset of the Day: World Bank Global Economic Monitor

Global Economic monitor database contains monthly statistics on consumer prices, international reserves, industrial production and merchandise trade as well as data on selected quarterly and annual economic indicators for more then 200 countries.

Private R&D Expenditures on Agriculture Worldwide

Growing world population, global food demand and the lack of extensive factors of production push food and agriculture producers to find a new ways to increase output.
According to USDA, private agriculture research and development (R&D) expenditures, increased from $6.9 billions in 2000 to $11 billions in 2010. R&D expenditures for crop seed & biotechnology, crop protection chemicals and farm machinery account for about 85% of total private R&D expenditures in the world.

Unemployment in the United States. Regional Breakdown

More than four years in a row unemployment in the US has exceeded 8% and millions of Americans are still suffering. After the unemployment rate reached its peak of 10% in October 2009, it decreased only by 1.8 percentage points so far and stayed at 8.2% in May 2012. Unemployment in California, which accounts for about 12% of total US GDP, is still higher than 10%.

Quick Facts on International Migration

About 3% of world population are international migrants. The United States has the highest stock of international migrants, which increased from 23.3 in 1990 to 42.8 million people in 2010. Russia, Germany, Saudi Arabia and Canada follow the U.S. in terms of international migrants stock.
In 2010 the outflow of international migrants from India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, China and Mexico taken together amounted to 11 million people. The majority of international migrants is a cheap and low qualified labor force. Only 5% of tertiary educated population in the world left their countries as international migrants.

Assessment and measurement of corruption

It is interesting that there is no relationship between actual level of corruption in the country and how people assess government's actions in the fight against corruption. In such a "clean" from corruption countries like Finland, Norway, Switzerland or Canada over 50% of respondents assess government's actions in the fight against corruption as ineffective. Similarly people estimate their governments in much more corrupted countries like Russia, China and Brazil.

One conclusion that probably could be done out of this comparison is that government's activity doesn't have much influence on the "perceived" level of corruption in countries around the world.

Prospects of car production in the world

Decline in demand during world economic crisis of 2008-2009 has caused troubles for many car producers especially in the United States, Europe and Japan.

Nevertheless, global long term prospects for automotive industry remain promising. Cars sales in emerging countries are well below the level of saturation.

In India and China, where lives almost 40% of world population, there are only 12 and 34 passenger cars per 1000 population, respectively.

Viz of the Day: Outpacing Growth of Health Expenditures

In 2010 expenditures on health in the USA amounted to $2 584 billion, which 2.5 times more than expenditures on health in all emerging countries taken together, or was equal to GDP of such developed country as France.
During 1995-2010 expenditures on health in current prices grew 2.6 times in United States and increased more then 4.5 times in emerging countries. At the same period World GDP (in current prices) increased only 2.3 times.

Viz of the Day: Fertility rate and school enrollment among women

During last 3 decades fertility rate decreased from 3.7 to 2.5 children per woman. Why do woman give less births today compared to 90s and 80s?

Actually there are many different reasons. And one of them is education. The more women are engaged in education the less is the fertility rate.

The highest fertility rates now are in African countries, where only about 20% of women get secondary education. On the contrary, in developed countries, where school enrollment rate among women is almost 100%, fertility rate is below 2 children per woman.

Viz of the Day: The Latest Economic Forecast from OECD

In June 2012, OECD updated its economic projections for the world economy, OECD countries and selected non-OECD members. Projections for GDP growth of the world economy remained almost unchanged.
Estimations of US GDP growth were increased to 2.4% and 2.6% in 2012-2013. On the contrary, Eurozone GDP forecast was revised downwards to -0.1% in 2012 and 0.9% in 2013. Compared to December 2011 forecast, OECD doesn't expect any essential deceleration of Chinese economy.

Dataset of the Day: Trends in Transport 2011

The International Transport Forum publication 'Trends in the Transport Sector' analyses global statistical data on passenger and freight movements for all modes. Data is mainly collected through a targeted survey. Data is available week 48 each year. The publication is published in May each year.

Viz of the Day: Difference of Daily Diet Across Countries

Due to many reasons people all over the world have different composition of their daily diet. Here we suggest you to look at how the composition of daily diet varies across different countries with the change of per capita income. People in high income countries consume more vegetable oils, sugar and sweeteners, milk and meat. With the decrease of income among countries, consumption of cereals accounts for bigger share of daily diet. People living at extreme poverty level consume much more starchy roots.

Name of each country on the chart below is followed by value of gross national income (GNI) per capita in current US$ for 2009 (source: The World Bank, World Development Indicators, April 2012). Data on composition of daily diet was calculated on a basis of Food Balance Sheets, released by FAO in June 2010.

Viz of the Day: World Reserves of Fossil Fuels

BP's "Statistical Review of World Energy" published in mid 2011 says that the world has in reserves 861 billion tonnes of coal, 187 trillion cubic meters of natural gas, and 1383 billion barrels of crude oil.
These numbers seems to be huge at a glance, but taking into account today's level of extraction proved reserves of coal will be exhausted in 118 years . The last cubic meter of natural gas will be extracted in 2070. And by 2050 there will be no reserves of crude oil.

Viz of the Day: Poverty in the World

According to The World Bank Poverty and Inequality Statistics, more than 1200 million people live on less than $1.25 a day (on a PPP basis). It means that every fifth person in the world lives in extreme poverty.

Dem. Rep. Congo is the country with the largest poverty level in the world with 87% of people living below $1.25 a day.

Explore "Poverty in the World" dashboard and check poverty statistics for different countries in the world.

Viz of the Day: R&D Expenditures

The USA has the highest research and development expenditures in the world. In 2008 it was almost $400 billions or 2.8% of GDP. The gap between the U.S. and other countries is essential. The rest from the top five (Japan, China, Germany and France) only taken together spend as much as the U.S.

The model of R&D expenditures differs from country to country. For example, expenditures on basic research account for 17% in total R&D expenditures in the U.S. compared to only 5% in China.

Dataset of the Day: Property Price Statistics, May 2012

Explore how property prices has changed in recent years in different countries with property price statistics from Bank For International Settlements. Dataset currently includes data on property prices from 41 countries.

Viz of the Day: The world's largest urban agglomerations

In 1950 New York with its 12.3 million people was the largest urban agglomeration. It was followed by Tokyo (11.3 mln.), London (8.4 mln.), Paris (6.3 mln.) and Moscow (5.4 mln.).

Only 4 cities from the former top 10 stay there 60 years later. Population of Tokyo more than trippled (reached almost 37 millions in 2010) and now it is the largest urban agglomeration on Earth. Population of New York increased by 8 millions since 1950, and now it is the fouth largest urban agglomeration.

New members in top ten are Delhi and Mexico City with population above 20 millions going after Tokyo. Today seven of ten largest urban agglomerations are located in Asia.

Dataset of the Day: UNESCO Institute for Statistics data, May 2012

This database contains over 1,000 types of indicators and raw data on education, literacy, science and technology, culture and communication.

Viz of the Day: Quick Stats on Africa

Africa is a continent with 1 billion people, which have an average income about $250 per person per month. African population is young and fast growing. More than 40% of people are under 14 years old and average annual growth of population is 2.3%. On average, every African women has more than 4 children.

Only 16% of population use internet. No more than 64% are provided by water supply and less then 40% of population have sanitation facilities.

Life expectancy at birth of average African citizen is only 57 years, from wich 47 years are expected to be а healthy life. 21% of population are undernourished people.

21 million people in Africa live with HIV/AIDS. And every year 1.3 million people die due to AIDS, and 1.4 million new and relapsed cases of tuberculosis are registred in African countries.

Data update - June 8

Now we have added another 28 datasets on various topics such as BMI(Body Mass Index), Facebook Subscribers & Internet User Statistics, Women parliamentarians, US Regional Statistics from Census Bureau’s Population Estimates Program, African Economic Outlook along with other latest version many dataset updates on World Steel Production, Interest Rate, FRED, etc.

Dataset of the Day: WHO Global Database on Body Mass Index (BMI)

WHO Database on Body Mass Index provides data on overweight and obesity among adults by country and sex.
Body mass index (BMI) is a simple index of weight-for-height that is commonly used to classify overweight and obesity in adults. It is defined as a person's weight in kilograms divided by the square of his height in meters (kg/m2). The WHO definition is: a BMI greater than or equal to 25 is overweight a BMI greater than or equal to 30 is obesity. BMI provides the most useful population-level measure of overweight and obesity as it is the same for both sexes and for all ages of adults. However, it should be considered a rough guide because it may not correspond to the same degree of fatness in different individuals.

Viz of the Day: Short view on the African Economy

According to African Economic Outlook (AEO), released at the end of May, 2012, African economy will perform solid and stable expansion in 2012-2013. AEO projects that economic growth in Africa will accelerate to 4.5% in 2012 and even to 4.8% in 2013. Among largest African economies Nigeria, Angola and Ethiopia will show booming (7% and above) GDP growth rates.

Dataset of the Day: OECD Factbook, 1950 to 2050

OECD Factbook provides a global overview of today’s major economic, social and environmental indicators. More countries than ever are covered in greater detail, enabling direct comparisons for many indicators between OECD Members and Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Russian Federation and South Africa.

Viz of the Day: Climate Change and Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Although causes of global warming are still argued, driven by natural forces or human interference, global warming is an evident fact now. And the second obvious thing is the immense growth of CO2 emissions, which increased x1000 times during 1753-2008 period (from 8 mln. metric tones of carbon to 8.7 billion metric tones).

Nowadays China and United States are responsible for almost 40% of global CO2 emissions. But the great difference between them consists in per capita CO2 emissions. While in US this indicator has been stable at 5 metric tones per person since the beginning of 80th, per capita CO2 emissions in China are relatively low - at 1.4 metric tones. And this is a general distinction between developed and developing world. It means that during many decades ahead, growing wealth in developed world will cause the increase of global greenhouse gas emissions.

Viz of the Day: US Regional Energy Statistics

Proportion of urban population living in slums, 1990-2010

Proportion of urban population in developing world increased by 10 percentage points during 1990-2010 and reached 45% in 2010. Income growth reduced the proportion of urban population living in slums from 46% in 1990 to 33% in 2010.

Nevertheless, population living in slums continues to grow and in 2010 it amounted to 828 million people (+171 million since 1990). More than half of increase comes from Sub-Saharan Africa, where population living in slums grew by 97 million from 1990.

Santa Clara, CA – DEMO Spring 2012 conference – April 18, 2012

Today at DEMO Spring 2012 Knoema launched publicly the world’s first knowledge platform that leverages data and offers tools to its users to harness the knowledge hidden within the data. Search and exploration of public data, its visualization and analysis has never been easier. With more than 500 datasets on various topics, gallery of interactive, ready to use dashboards and its user friendly analysis and visualization tools Knoema does for data what YouTube did to videos.

Millions of users interested in data, like analysts, students, researchers and journalists struggle to satisfy their data needs. At the same time there are many organizations, companies and government agencies around the world collecting and publishing data on various topics. But still getting access to relevant data for analysis or research can take hours with final outcomes in many formats and standards that can take even longer to get it to a shape where it can be used. This is one of the issues that the search engines like Google or Bing face even after indexing entire Internet due to nature of statistical data and diversity and complexity of sources.

One-stop shop for data. Knoema with its state of the art search engine makes it is a matter of minutes if not seconds to find statistical data on almost any topic in easy to ingest formats. Knoema’s search instantly provides highly relevant results with chart previews and actual numbers. Search results can be further explored with Dataset Browser tool. In Dataset Browser tool users can get full access to the entire public data collection, explore it, visualize data on tables/charts and download it as Excel/CSV files.

Numbers made easier to understand and use. Knoema enables end-to-end experience for data users allowing creation of highly visual, interactive dashboards with a combination of text, tables, charts and maps. Dashboards built by users can be shared to other people or on social media, exported to Excel or PowerPoint and embedded to blogs or any other web site. All public dashboards made by users available in dashboard gallery on home page. People can collaborate on data related issues participating in discussions, exchanging data and content.

Open Data platform. Knoema is Open Data platform which provides access to all public datasets for free and exposes industry-standard REST API for advanced data users and developers allowing rapid creation of interactive, data-driven applications. In addition to its proprietary APIs Knoema platform provides support for industrial OData and SDMX formats for data interoperability and exchange.

Enterprise offering. For companies and organizations Knoema provides hosted SaaS solution allowing them to build their own specialized data portals for their employees or clients with minimal efforts. Such portals can have custom selection of private and public datasets. Portals can be private, available only for employees or accessible publicly. Custom company’s branding and domain name can be utilized to deliver natural, no transition experience for portal users. In simple word Knoema offers out of the box data dissemination capabilities for users within and outside the enterprise.
