Present dashboard is aimed at providing comprehensive visual analysis of the dataset developed on the basis of the research "Projection of populations by level of educational attainment, age, and sex for 120 countries for 2005-2050" (Samir KC et al., 2010) (http://www.demographic-research.org/volumes/vol22/15/22-15.pdf).

Tourism

Along with its cultural, leisure and recreational functions tourism contributes significantly (both directly and indirectly) to the world's economy and employment. It contributes to GDP even more than the automotive industry in all the regions throughout the globe: three times as much in Americas and two times as much in Europe, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council's 2013 research.

Concerning employment, 102 million of persons worldwide, or 3.3% of the world's total employed population, were involved directly in travel and tourism industry in 2013, which is almost as much as the population of Mexico.

Access to mobile subscriptions in Africa

Mobile subscription in Ethiopia have gone up 15 times in last 5 years.

Eritrea has less than 6 people per 100 who have acces to mobile subscriptions as compared to 185+ in Gabon.

80% of countries in Africa are below the average mobile subscriptions in the World.

In last 5 years the mobile subscriptions increased 100% across the World, 200% in Sub-Saharan Africa and increased 350% in South Asia.

Telecommunication

Along with the impressive figures of world's recent telecommunication technology development such as doubling of the households with internet access through the last decade or nearing to a reading of one mobile cellular phone per person, there are still a lot of countries where Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) uptake is still very low.

Thus, in Africa, as for 2012, only 8% of households possess a computer and only 6% have access in the Internet. For comparison, in Europe the same indicators constitute 76 and 74 percent respectively making European region the leader by affordability of personal computers and the Internet. What are the other tendencies taking place across the globe which is headily moving towards information society? To answer this question, explore data and ready-made visual analysis presented below.

World Data Atlas - a single place for data discovery

We've made some amazing changes to World Data Atlas recently.

We've merged  Dataset Browser and World Data Atlas, and now Atlas is the only destination in Knoema where you can browse and find data.

And here's the short roundup of main opportunities you can use while working with the updated World Data Atlas.
  • Use separate Source tab with a huge collection of different sources including the World Bank, IMF, OECD and many (500+) others;

100K monthly users!

We are proud to announce that we have reached the milestone of 100K unique visitors last month.

And we are not just saying that Knoema is the largest open and public data repository. We are constantly expanding data array and now we count 250 million time series in the system. Just so you know last year we counted 100 million time series for the same time period.

All these achievements are great for us and we want to THANK YOU for making them real. We will be extremely happy if you stay in touch with us and share the joy of all our future achievements! They all mean nothing without you.

It is important to understand global education tendencies in order to support sustainable development. So, literacy still remains important problem since more than 40 percent of population of Sub-Saharan Africa remains illiterate accounting for almost half of the world's illiterate population. It is closely connected to the problem of lack of teachers in the region: in average it accrues about 40 pupils per one teacher in primary education.

Poverty

According to World Bank Group, more than one fifth of the population of the developing world lives in extreme poverty, that is, lives with incomes below the threshold of $1.25 a day, constituting about 1.2 billion people.

Although these disturbing figures, world has achieved impressive results in poverty reduction during the last 3 decades, even surpassing the expectations of the first Millennium Development Goal of reducing extreme poverty twofold: since 1981 the number of extremely poor people in the developing countries has dropped by more than 720 million people, while it is expected to reduce to 3% of population by 2030, as to World Bank goal.

Land Use

Total land area of Earth is 149 millions of square kilometers and it is almost equally distributed between agricultural, forest, and other lands with the slight overweight of the former one accounting for about 38% of world's land area.

At the same time, only one third of world's agricultural land is used as arable land, two-thirds is occupied by permanent meadows and pastures and the remaining 3% is referred to permanent crops.
