New Beautiful Rankings in the World Data Atlas

Ranking is one of the main methods to visualize data in Knoema, allowing you to visually compare countries, regions and other items using a selected indicator.

Rankings of countries and regions appeared in the very first version of the World Data Atlas in 2013, and to date, their appearance has not changed. We decided to update their appearance, and to add new functionality.

Further, let's consider the changes in more detail:

  • Updated design using lighter colors and a thinner type had made the World Data Atlas more pleasant and comprehensible for the user's perception;
  • Combining tables and rankings, we obtained a ranking table for easy analysis and viewing of data in one place;
  • The column headings became clickable - by clicking on one of them, you'll get a ranking for the selected date.

The World's Top 100 Airports

If the quality of airports you transit strongly influences your assessment of your overall travel experience, head to Asia. According to the Skytrax World Airport Awards 2017, Asia boasts five of the world’s top 10 airports. Europe came in a close second with four entries in the top 10, led by Munich Airport, ranked fourth globally.

First place was awarded to Airport Changi (Singapore), a rank attributable in part to its various facilities for leisure and entertainment designed to ensure maximum levels of passenger satisfaction.

Gender Diversity and Corporate Boards: A Review of Global Trends

It will of course require more than a bronzed statue of a strong-willed girl taking on the bull of Wall Street to force a sustained and amplified role for women in the upper echelons of the corporate world. But, how far have we come globally in opening c-suites and corporate board rooms to women?

On average, during the period from 2008 to 2014, the participation rate of women on corporate boards increased in most of the publicly traded corporations included in major equity indices.

Forbes 2016 World's Most Powerful People

Every year Forbes publishes a list of nearly 80 people who make the world turn. The annual list is made up of presidents, prime ministers, CEOs, spiritual leaders, and the world's richest people. This year's edition includes the new president of the U.S., Donald Trump, who was ranked the second most powerful person on the planet, right after Vladimir Putin, who tops the list since 2015. In today's viz, we share the most recent results and some of the underlying data behind the rankings.

What Are the Busiest Months for Births?

It is assumed that births are unevenly distributed throughout any given year, with the distribution influenced by such factors as climate, culture, and major economic and social events. But, is there evidence for this hypothesis? We at Knoema believe that the best evidence starts with data. So, we collected demographic statistics on the number of births monthly from January 2009 through December 2015 for two countries—Russia and the United States—to see what the data could tell us.

The data clearly shows that births are not randomly distributed throughout the year, instead, births seem to correspond with climate and leisure conditions, which may influence parents’ desire to conceive children.

Drug Overdose Deaths in the United States

Deaths by drug overdose have surged in the US in recent years, reaching what some call epidemic levels in select states and among certain segments of the US population. Drug overdose deaths in the United States have increased three-fold since 1999 from roughly 17,000 deaths to about 52,500 deaths in 2015, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Over the same period, the overdose death rate increased from 6 to 16 deaths per 100,000 people, which means that it grew at a much higher pace than did the US population. To put this further into perspective, the CDC data tell us that in 2015 more people died from drug overdoses in the United States than died from armed conflict in Africa.

The Largest Commodity Price Changes of 2016

Sustained swings in commodity prices attract the attention of a variety of people around the world from traders, researchers, and analysts to policymakers and interested citizens. Commodity prices respond to changes in demand and supply forces as well as irrational exuberance of the markets. In today’s viz we opt to set aside price theory to focus instead on uncovering the largest price changes of 2016 for a selection of internationally traded commodities as well as the largest historic prices changes during the period monitored by the World Bank for the same commodities.

World's Safest Vehicles of 2017

Even as the design of cars become increasingly safety focused and even automated, speed, texting, and driving while under the influence contribute to a rising number of deaths from motor vehicle crashes, particularly in the United States. Asian car manufacturers nearly swept the 2016 motor vehicle safety rankings by the US Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), securing nine of the top 10 spots. Only Daimler's (Germany) Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class joined Toyota, Hyundai, Subaru, and Honda in the top 10.
